Science Notes

Science information and resources for ASD-N

Notes

The Provincial Scientific Literacy assessments will be administered in grades 4, 6 and 8. While the best preparation is for students to actively do science and apply their skills throughout the year, it is also important to practice reading and answering the types of questions found on the assessment.

Please take the time to look over the attached documents. They outline the focused strands that will be assessed on the Scientific Literacy Assessment as well as give feedback on the areas of strength and need for improvement from the 2022-2023 assessment.

We are also very strongly recommending that your students experience the practice assessment on Vretta before attempting the actual assessment. The questions are simpler than the ones that they will see on the real assessment, but it gives an excellent idea of the format: Vretta Practice

Please reach out if you have any questions pertaining to the Scientific Literacy component of the assessment. If you have questions about the Vretta platform, please reach out to the assessment coordinator at your school or Heather Desjardins (EECD) Heather.Desjardins@gnb.ca

Science Lesson Guides

With the shift in focus of science education in recent years, EECD created Science Lesson Guides to offer teachers a set of guides based on the previous curriculum documents. These have not yet been revised for the Gr 3-10 Renewed Science Curricula but they offer insight and ideas for inquiry-based learning.

Please click below or see attached for the grade level correlations to the Renewed 3-10 Science Curricula Core Ideas:

In a year that has been, yet again, like no other, you have been persisting, adapting, and reinventing learning in your classroom.  We have seen you go above and beyond to provide opportunities for your students to learn about Science and STEM in their lives.

This year, to continue promoting and instilling a love for Science, STEM and general wonder about ourselves and the world around us, ASD-N will be celebrating learning in our district with a STEM Showcase during NB Science Week 2022 – March 21-24.

Our Cross-Curricular & Science Team has partnered with local NB organizations: Centres of Excellence, The Gaia Project, Brilliant Labs and APEGNB to host projects and challenges for classes across ASD-N.

The goal of the ASD-N STEM Showcase is to celebrate all you’ve done and all that you are doing to keep our students curious, engaged and inspired.

Please see below for all the opportunities to show off your STEM learning!
