Croft STEM Enrichment - House of Cards Activity

Croft students in grades 4 and 5 are participating in a STEM enrichement that will culminate with the STEM Projects to be displayed at the ASD-N Elementary STEM Fair.  In this session we learned the design process by building the tallest house of cards.  Students evaluated their designs and offered feedback to other groups and redesigned based on new discovery.

Engineering/Innovation Project Planning Guides

ASD-N has recently made a shift towards STEM projects rather then traditional Science Fair Projects.  This along with the emphasis on variables and data collection in the spotlight on skills documents (3-8) has created some confusion about how an Engineering or Innovation based projects can fit.  Planning documents at both the elementary and middle/high level have been created for teachers to use for these type of projects.

RES Materials and Structures Grade 3 Enrichment - Day 3

Today we added to our previous learning of making materials more stable but introducing the concept of fastners.  Students did an inquiry activity to see which fastners make straws the most stable.  From our discussion those concpets were used in planning their next structure.  Students began to plan the mateirals, fastners and design concepts needed, eventually they built small models of their designs to see if their plans worked.

Materials and Structures Enrichment at RES

Day one of our enrichement had groups of students working on three individual structures: Tall; Strong; and Crossing an Open Space.

Students acted like Engineers to collaborate to build a structure based on the assigned task.  They troubleshootted issues, took suggestions from other groups and applied what they learned to make a plan for next time.
