On Saturday, March 19th Rexton Elementary School saw its cafeteria full of students and parents from all corners of Anglophone North School District (ASDN) eager to compete in the 2016 ASDN Chess Tournament. Not only were students from the Campbellton, Dalhousie, Bathurst, Miramichi, and Rexton areas represented but ages ranged from our youngest competitor, Watson Oliveira, in Kindergarten to our oldest, Zane MacCallum in Grade 9.
Each year Rexton Elementary, under the leadership of Principal Diane Wilson, hosts and organizes this event for students of ASDN. This year saw a record number of participants and with the help of teacher-volunteers Nick Scully of Harcourt Elementary and Susan Vienneau of Eleanor W. Graham Middle School the event ran seamlessly.
Students were separated into two rooms; one contained K-4 students while the other housed the Grade 5-8 competitors. Each student competed against peers in his/her grade level in a round-robin style format. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finalists received a medal and those placing in 1st and 2nd will have their registration sponsored by ASDN to attend the Provincial Chess Tournament held in Edmundston on Saturday, April 16th.

Winners of the NB Provincial Chess Tournament will earn the honour of representing our Province at the National Chess Tournament held in Regina, Saskatchewan on May 22nd and 23rd.
