Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) have been causing a buzz in Anglophone School District North (ASDN) and this was highlighted by the staff and students of Harkins Middle School on Tuesday, March 22nd.
The hallways were packed with students presenting their STEM Fair projects; Robots crawled, rolled, and drove through the classrooms; students played piano using bananas as their keyboards; drones flew overhead; structures were built; math games were played; and models were printed using a state-of-the-art 3D printer.
As students eagerly presented their projects and tinkered with gizmos and gadgets it was evident that parents were in awe of the work produced by these talented youth. Equally amazing was the display of technology afforded to the students of ASDN and the way it engaged them in the learning process by bringing 21st century technology into the curriculum. Much of this equipment has been gained through grant applications to Brilliant Labs which has been a great supporter of many innovative projects happening in ASDN. The success of this partnership was evident as parents remarked, “I wish I could go back to Middle School!”
The sheer number of students who returned to school from 6pm-7pm to learn, “make”, create, and present is a testament to the work of both the staff and students as well as the support of parents from the Harkins Middle School Community.
