On Wednesday May 25th the sun was shining, the thermostat was reading over 25 and summer was in the air but this did not stop students at Rexton Elementary from eagerly returning to school from 6pm-7pm to participate in Family Math Night.
This annual event, organized by the staff of Rexton Elementary, with support of ASD-N Numeracy Leads, is a community favorite. Over 50 people crowded into the cafeteria to solve tangram puzzles, play Connect Four, compete at strategy games like Survivor, challenge each other at chess, and numerous other games laid out on the tables.
The laughs and smiles in the room were infectious as parents worked with, and competed against, their children and friends. While the class with the greatest attendance received an ice cream party, it was evident that the real prize was spending quality time with friends and family.
Many of the games provided for this event came from the online booklet, “Making Math More Fun” (Click here for the link). If your school is interested in hosting a Family Math Night please contact your Numeracy Lead and we would be happy to help set up this wonderful initiative.
